Family gardens managed by women in Iringa, Tanzania

29 August, 2025

The Agrónomos Sin Fronteras Foundation and the Esperanza y Alegría Foundation, with the support of the San Fernando de Henares City Council, have successfully concluded the project “Creation of family gardens managed by women and promotion of the model in the rural district of Iringa, Tanzania.”

Over seven months of joint work with local communities, the following results were achieved:

  • 50 family gardens were built, 10 in each of the five participating villages (Kiwere, Mgera, Mangalali, Kalenga, and Kiponzelo). All gardens are located next to the homes of the women beneficiaries and are equipped with fencing, a drip irrigation system, a 200-liter water tank, and selected seeds for household consumption.
  • All 50 gardens are currently in the production phase. A positive development of crops is observed, indicating good progress towards obtaining fresh and nutritious food. The 50 women in charge have received practical training in sustainable agriculture, irrigation management, pest control, and family nutrition.
  • Community outreach sessions were carried out in the five villages, aimed at people interested in replicating the model. A total of 227 participants (187 women and 40 men) took part, far exceeding the initial target of 160 women. Activities included the distribution of seed kits, practical sessions on garden installation, cultivation techniques, and cooking demonstrations.

This intervention has contributed to improving food security, nutritional diversity, and access to healthy food in participating households, while also strengthening the role of women as agents of change in their family and community environment.

We are especially grateful for the commitment of our local partner, Assisting Small Farmers, as well as the collaboration of local authorities and the communities of the rural district of Iringa.
